How to evaluate my cargo carriage cost ?

You will be charged based on the set sealift rates, as published on this website. The charges will apply depending on the weight or the volume, per package (cargo unit), whichever produces the greater income. The cost based on weight is determined by multiplyong the rate by the total of metric tons (mt) and the cost based on volume is calculated by multiplying the rate by the number of space units required on the vessel for your package (one cargo space unit = 2.5 m³). Desgagnés Transarctik Inc. ( DTI), Nunavut Sealink and Supply Inc. (NSSI) and Taqramut Transport Inc. (TTI) use the metric system.

We have a quote tab in the schedule and rates tab on the website.

You will need the dimensions of your cargo, the weight and the final destination to get a cost estimate.

Keeping in mind that one cubic meter(m³) is equivalent to 35.3 cubic feet (ft³), and that one metric ton is equivalent to 2,200 pounds (lbs). Follow these steps for your calculations:

Volume evaluation of your package to calculate carriage cost: Measure or evaluate the overall package to determine the volume in cubic meter (m³). If you measured it in feet (ft), then remember to convert the resulting volume into cubic meters (m³), by dividing the number of cubic feet (ft³) by 35.3;

Divide this volume by 2.5 m³ (one cargo space unit) to obtain the number of cargo space units required.

Weight evaluation of your package to calculate carriage cost :

If the weight of your package is evaluated in pounds (lbs), then don't forget to divide by 2,200 lbs to obtain the weight in metric tons (tm);

Use the greater of the two results, between the calculated cargo space units and the real ton weight, and multiply it by the applicable rate. You will obtain a close estimate of the carriage cost of your package or cargo unit.

For example, you wish to ship, from Montreal to Rankin Inlet, a bundle of lumber ( 2 in x 4 in x 8 ft) strapped on a skid or a pallet . The bundle measures 5 ft W x 4 ft H x 8 ft L, and weighs 4, 180 lb.

The volume is therefore 160 cubic feet (ft³) or 4.532 cubic meters (m³)

So, 4.532 m³ : 2.5 m³ (one cargo space unit) = 1.81 cargo space units required;

The ton-weight is 4,180 lb : 2,200 = 1.90 metric ton (mt)

In this case the greater result is the weight ton.

How to evaluate the carriage cost for a vehicle, pick-up truck or snowmobile?

The carriage costs for most vehicles are calculated and invoiced, based on their volume. You therefore need to either measure the vehicule or obtain this infromation from your dealer.

We have a quote tab in the schedule and rates tab on the website.

You will need the dimensions of your cargo, the weight and the final destination to get a cost estimate.

Most manufacturers snowmobile have standard-size crates for their products. To evaluate the sealift carriage cost of your snowmobile, ask your supplier to provide you with the crate dimensions for your snowmobile model and apply the calculation formula, as explained above.

How to pay my sealift cost? When do I pay ?

DTI, NSSI and TTI accept credit cards (Visa and MasterCard), certified check and bank transfers.

Unless you are a government organization, institution or company with a DTI, NSSI or TTI account with an approved credit limit, then your payment should be made prior to the cargo loading at the terminal. The detailed invoice will be sent to you with the pertinent documents following receipt of your cargo at the terminal before the vessel's loading.

If you wish to pay by credit card, this can be done over the phone, and the payment receipt will be returned to you, by mail, with the rest of the documents.

How do I get to your facilities at the docks ?

A map with illustrations is included in this website. You can also  e-mail it to your supplier.

How to proceed when shipping hazardous materials or dangerous goods?

Dangerous goods tranportation is governed by a Federal legislation and is subject to specific regulations. For more detailed information please see the About Dangerous Goods; it will provide you with important documentation and links to Transport Canada and other useful websites.

However, as a sealift user, you are not expected to be an expert on the subject, but you are expected to be aware and informed that it is illegal for a carrier to receive, handle and transport any hazardous materials or dangerous goods that are not properly prepared and documented for that purpose. It is the shipper’s responsibility to ensure that the documents are properly complete or have them properly completed by a person or an agent who is trained and certified for that purpose.

When placing an order from your supplier, ask him if any of your purchased items are classified as dangerous goods. If this is the case, then make sure that your supplier is equipped and committed to preparing your cargo shipment accordingly, and that all paperwork complies with sealift requirements.

It is important that your sealift carrier be informed beforehand of any shipment that includes dangerous goods. DTI, NSSI and TTI require this information 15 days prior to the cut-off date and must be detailed on your Booking Note.

Can the sealift user include personal effects in a vehicle or a truck that is to be shipped by sealift?

Several factors must be considered a priority in relation to vehicles, such as safety during the vessels' loading and unloading the liability of the maritime carrier.

The maritime carrier can not be held responsible for personal effects included inside a vehicle. The maritime carrier will only tolerate a maximum of 150 kgs of personal effects within a standard vehicle or truck.

Moreover, the carrier may refuse receipt of a vehicle that appears overloaded, since damages could occur to its suspension and, more importantly, it could become a safety hazard during loading and unloading operations.

It is essential that the following safety measures are met:

No parcel(s) are allowed to be stowed on the front seat;

No cargo can exceed the lowest level of the cabin rear windows;

All merchandise in the trunk must respect the overall weight restriction of 150 kg of personal effects and the trunk should be locked;

Fuel tanks must not be filled to more than one quarter (1/4) of their full capacity and there should be enough fuel to be able to move the vehicules during loading and unloading operations;

If the vehicule needs to be boosted, charges will apply;

The customer must provide a key to his vehicule;

The vehicule and the brakes need to be functional and safe; The vehicule must be clean in order to facilitate its inspection;

Upon delivery, the customer must be able to provide the weight of the vehicle (copy of the registration, a weighing receipt for the vehicule or official document from the dealer.

How to proceed when insuring cargo? What is the sealift carrier’s limit of liability?

For each cargo unit (crate, bundle, vehicle, etc.) listed on your manifest, the maritime carrier’s liability for damage is limited to two thousand seven hundred and seventhy five dollars ($2,775). Information on the carrier’s limited liability is included in the Booking Note under the main terms, which said document is an integral part of the Booking Note, constituting a contract signed with Nunavut Sealink and Supply Inc., Taqramut Transport Inc. and its respective clients.

It is therefore recommended that sealift users properly evaluate their needs for additional insurance coverage. Information on this subject is provided on this website. Sealift users should contact their Insurance underwriter or consult the section “insurance»,
